What is garden Design?

The RHS describes garden design as “the art of making beautiful gardens so that every part fits harmoniously into the whole”.

The end product is a scaled plan, which shows the elements within a garden, where they should be placed and what they should be.

The design will take into account the particular conditions of the site, the taste and requirements of the owner, and will consider how each element interacts with the others to influence the space and atmosphere within the garden. It is the result of a lengthy design process, described in more detail on the Process pages.

The plan is the end result of the design process, and the beginning of the garden transformation. You will need to engage a landscape contractor to implement the design – we do not carry out the build work ourselves. However, we do have a number of contractors we work with and we can help you to find someone suitable.
